Sunda Fulton Market
Sunda Fulton Market in Chicago features innovative design elements by Studio K, such as a split communal table host stand, a lush garden room, and cultural-inspired décor.
Upon entry, guests are greeted by an innovative host stand designed inspired by a split communal table, one side adorned with a reflective mirror surface that immediately amplifies the space’s dynamic energy. To the left lies the garden room, featuring hanging kokedama moss balls, transforming the area into a lush, green haven.
The main dining area comfortably accommodates 210 guests, surrounded by bespoke elements such as curved panels, adding a sophisticated touch to the aesthetic. A bamboo halo around the dining room was inspired by Billy’s travels throughout Southeast Asia. The bar features 161,200 individual strings of capiz shells, reminiscent of garden welcome rooms Billy loved when he was growing up and visiting his family in the Islands of the Philippines, placed overhead to form a captivating sculptural element. Additionally, 1000 handmade Pamaypay handheld fans from the Philippines create the wall covering the main dining room, adding an authentic and cultural touch. Porcelain and ceramic finishes enhance the luxuriousness of the bar, inviting guests to linger and enjoy the atmosphere.
Art by Maaike Verdurmen and Noor van Spaendonck are strategically placed to enrich the narrative of the space, supported by custom draperies and textured wall coverings that add depth and intrigue. Each design choice tells a story of heritage intertwined with modern design principles.
Adjacent to the sushi bar, a collection of kokeshi dolls invites guests to engage with the space on a personal level, echoing Billy and Karen’s intent to create a community within the restaurant’s walls. This personal touch not only enhances the décor but also invites diners to contribute to the continuing story of Sunda New Asian.
Sunda Fulton Market is more than a place to dine; it is a venue where every element—from the lush garden room to the sophisticated main dining area—invites exploration and enjoyment.
