Courtyard Oahu North Shore
Inspired by the spirit of Aloha and community in Laie, Hawaii, the project’s design blends historic plantation style with modern elements to create a welcoming, culturally rich atmosphere, by STUDIO a28.
Our design was inspired by the spirit of Aloha, celebrating the rich heritage of Hawaiian culture and the local community of Laie. “Aloha,” which can be roughly translated as the “breath of life,” is rooted in the belief that life begins in the dark, before color is introduced. This inspired our color palette. We started with deep, moody tones, contrasting them with lighter hues layered with vibrant accents throughout. At the core of our design philosophy is Ohana, which reflects the importance of community. This was thoughtfully woven into the space, with various seating arrangements throughout the public areas and multi-purpose spaces for activities like luau lessons, creating natural gathering spots where guests can relax, recharge, and enjoy moments of “le’ale’a” (fun). During our immersive research trip to Laie, we also discovered that “talking story” plays a significant role in the local community, a concept we honored in the design. This is reflected in elements such as net-like textures in the lighting, which pay tribute to the hukilau, and plantation-inspired features that harken back to the islands’ most prosperous era. Historically, Laie’s community thrived during the early 1900s, with the success of the sugar cane and pineapple industries. During this time, the plantation-style bungalow became a symbol of Old Hawaii, with its charming porches, wide-hipped roofs, and exposed rafters, all of which carry a rich cultural legacy. Our design blends this historic style with modern touches and clean, fresh lines to create a welcoming and rejuvenating atmosphere.
