D/DOCK reimagines Amsterdam’s Marriott Hotel ground floor with a contemporary take on quiet luxury and local character
D/DOCK has transformed the ground floor of the iconic Amsterdam Marriott Hotel, infusing new life into Europe’s first-ever Marriott property as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The redesign introduces a vibrant sequence of seamlessly interconnected spaces, each with its own distinct character, yet unified through the Great Room concept. From the warm sophistication of the Lobby and M Club lounge to the dynamic Bar and inviting Library, every zone feels like an extension of the guest room: intimate, welcoming, and residential in spirit.
The monumental Brutalist architecture of the building is subtly echoed in interior details such as columns and flooring, grounding the spaces in their original character while introducing a refined human scale.
Inspired by Amsterdam’s multi-layered spirit, the design draws connections with the city through custom furniture, bespoke finishes, and a curated art collection. Over ten local artists — both Dutch and international creatives based in the country — were invited to contribute a blend of newly created and carefully selected existing works to enrich the space with stories of place, identity, and belonging. The result is a narrative-driven environment where art, design, and hospitality converge.
The Lobby: A grand welcome with local soul
Guests are welcomed by reception pods built from solid glass bricks, an homage to Amsterdam’s iconic canal-side architecture. Framed by amber-lit atmosphere and bespoke D/DOCK artworks inspired by the city’s waters, the lobby sets a tone of warm sophistication. A series of inviting lounge settings, composed of carefully paired furnishings, echo the charm of an elegant modern residence and provide spaces to pause, connect, or unwind.
M Club: A gentle retreat inspired by spring
Open 24/7 for Amsterdam Marriott Hotel’s fidelity guests, the M Club is a calm oasis, designed for every moment of the day – from an energising breakfast to quiet work sessions, afternoon wind-downs, or evening bites and drinks. Inspired by the early days of spring in Amsterdam, soft hues, layered materials, and commissioned pieces by Edith Beurkens, April van Domburg, and Tati O Nishi create a space that is both tranquil and uplifting, resonating with the vitality of spring.
Library: Intimacy, connection, and the craft of storytelling
Situated between the Lobby and Bar, the Library is designed as an environment for quiet work and casual lounging. Layered lighting, enveloping curtains, and curated artworks enhance the sense of intimacy. Highlights include a tile composition by Tom van Soest, a ceramic sculpture by CCONTINUA + MAMT, and a canvas by Tati O Nishi. The Library pays tribute to Amsterdam’s spirit of inclusion and openness, qualities integral to the city’s strength and global identity, subtly referencing its nickname Mokum (“safe haven”) in its design gestures.
Bar TWLV: A destination for every moment of the day
At the heart of the ground floor, TWLV is more than a bar. It’s a vibrant social hub for guests and locals, with panoramic city views. Anchored by an island bar with an integrated DJ booth, the space unfolds into four distinct yet harmonised zones, each with varied seating typologies, and flexible use throughout the day. The design is reflective of Amsterdam’s outdoors — shimmering waters, city bricks, birds, flowers and glazed tiles — while infusing the space with cosmopolitan elegance. Art plays a key role in shaping the bar’s atmosphere. One standout piece is a glazed wall sculpture by Eline Bass, adding a bold yet poetic layer to the interior narrative.
The Dynamic Lounge: Where colour, conversation, and creativity meet
Behind the bar, the Dynamic Lounge comes alive in bold bordeaux tones and glowing accents. Designed for informal meetings or private moments, the space evolves with the evening, offering a dramatic yet intimate retreat. Striking panels and expressive artworks amplify Amsterdam’s creative pulse and form a world of their own within the hotel.
Tasting Corner: Immersive experiences in intimate surroundings
For a more intimate experience, the Tasting Corner offers a secluded retreat where expert-led tastings and curated experiences unfold in a setting of deep moody tones. A soft glow filters through a watercolour-like display of exclusive wine bottles, creating an atmosphere of discovery and exclusivity. The space, also available for private gatherings, features a cosy lounge area and high table, making it ideal for small events and special occasions.
Through thoughtful design and meaningful curation, D/DOCK has created more than a stylish hotel interior. It has composed a living dialogue between past and present, international flair and local grounding, private moments and social connection. The renewed Amsterdam Marriott Hotel welcomes guests to an environment of understated luxury and residential comfort blending global influences with the unique essence of Amsterdam.
