Max’s Best Ice Cream
//3877’s Max’s Best Ice Cream in Bethesda, Maryland, artfully transforms a former furniture store into an inclusive, mid-century modern space that harmonizes accessible design with whimsical hospitality.
DMV-based architecture and design firm //3877 recently debuted a powerful F&B concept with Max’s Best Ice Cream, transforming a former furniture store into an award-worthy model for inclusive, sophisticated hospitality in Bethesda, Maryland. The design is a heartfelt tribute, blending a mid-century modern aesthetic with the whimsical charm of “a modern apothecary meets European brasserie.”
//3877 successfully translated the owners’ vision—which includes a crucial partnership with Best Buddies International to provide integrated employment for the IDD community—into a physically accessible and visually engaging space. //3877 championed the design principle of functionality over ornamentation, ensuring the space is as practical as it is playful. Here’s a few other highlights:
Strategic Wayfinding: A high-contrast, white terrazzo path embedded in the floor acts as clear wayfinding, guiding every patron directly to the service counter, supported by distinct color blocking for key areas.
Bespoke Details: The firm used Max’s favorite deep teal across porcelain floor tile and the ceiling, offset by warm wood millwork and a complementary turquoise (a nod to the brand partners). A curved ceiling element over the L-shaped quartz service counter adds visual interest and a relaxed, playful vibe.
Inclusive Seating: The design provides diverse, comfortable seating for 30-35 guests of all abilities, including plush U-shaped booths and accessible stone-look tables.
