Lil Woody’s Seattle-Tacoma International Airport

Ideation Design Group’s Lil Woody’s at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport captures the essence of a beloved local burger joint, seamlessly integrating playful design elements and efficient traveler experiences within the bustling airport environment.

Located in the North Terminal of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), Lil Woody’s Burgers and Shakes translates the beloved experience of the local burger joint into a memorable airport space, seamlessly maintaining the dynamic energy of its streetside locations throughout the Seattle area. Ideation Design Group (IDG) partnered with the neighborhood-born chain to realize its vision, serving as the interior designer, foodservice designer, and architect.

The space feels unmistakably local and instantly recognizable, while remaining highly efficient for both dine-in and grab & go travelers. The airport space draws much of its inspiration from Lil Woody’s existing locations throughout the city, blending retro Americana diner elements––such as, bold signage, warm woods, industrial metalwork and playful graphics––to create a memorable touchpoint that embodies brand personality and regional flair.

Guests are greeted by the illuminated Lil Woody’s signage, bold red accents, and signature branded graphics, setting a playful tone for the experience from its first impression. The space’s sweeping curve ensures immediate visibility from the concourse, offering a clear view into the bar, dining, and ordering areas. Inside, playful speech-bubble signs guide travelers intuitively to order and pick-up points, while warm wood textures and patterned flooring add energy and character to the restaurant’s architectural presence within the open airport concourse.

The bar serves as a central anchor of the concept, with a textured stainless-steel face, wood lattice ceiling, globe pendants, and soft under-bar lighting, to create an inviting place to land before a flight. The dining area wraps along the concourse with custom wood banquettes, red schoolhouse chairs, and a branded glass divider featuring Lil Woody’s illustrations. Standout design features include a large neon-inspired burger artwork that establishes an immediate visual identity, along with a checker-tiled low wall that nods to classic diner nostalgia and reinforces the brand’s aesthetic. At the heart of the space, a bold, custom tile installation reading “What’s Up Seattle” provides a memorable localized moment that celebrates the brand’s roots and connects travelers to the spirit of the city.

The color palette is driven by Lil Woody’s signature bold hue, supported by warm neutrals and natural tones from locally-sourced wood. Charcoal and black elements ground the design through metalwork, bar detailing, and countertop accents, further enriched by textural materials like corrugated and ribbed metal, branded glass panels, and powder-coated steel. The floor features custom-patterned and colored mosaic floor tile, developed specifically for the location to reinforce brand identity and anchor the space visually. The careful selection of high-performance, airport-grade materials met the durability requirements of the high-traffic area while delivering the warm, branded experience Lil Woody’s is known for. Several efficiencies, including optimized kitchen and back of house flow along with an intuitive customer circulation for ordering, pick-up, and bar service result in a seamless experience for staff and diners alike.

IDG’s thoughtful design approach establishes a distinct sense of place for Lil Woody’s, representing the brand’s playful brand heritage and strong local identity. Balancing airport efficiencies with design rooted in brand character, Lil Woody’s SEA maintains the familiar comfort of a neighborhood burger joint within the new context of an airport environment.
