  • In our most recent project hcreates delves into the heart of Ningbo, where a 280 square meter space blurs the lines between a bakery and an all-day dining experience. This project stands as a testament to the power of design in creating a community hub, inspired by the meticulous craft of traditional baking methods.

The design concept marries the modernity of a workshop with the charm of a traditional French bakery. The focus is on the artisanal quality and time-honored techniques of baking, setting the establishment apart in a bustling urban environment.

The design process began with the client’s visual branding, leading to a pixelization concept. Each pixel represents an individual in the community, coming together to form a complete image. This metaphor extends to the brand’s growth, built on the foundation of traditional methods. The design team navigated between enhancing this pixelization and maintaining the essence of a traditional bakery, striking a balance that forms the brand’s identity.

For the designers, achieving a harmony between aesthetic appeal and practicality was paramount. The space needed to operate efficiently while providing privacy and comfort. The design ensures a seamless connection between the back of house and the customer experience, with neither element overshadowing the other.

The layout was dictated by the site’s natural conditions, such as light and utility placements. A variety of seating options cater to different customer preferences, from open spaces to private nooks. Collaboration with a Visual Identity (VI) consultant ensured that the brand’s essence was woven throughout the design, enhancing the narrative within the space.

Despite being located in a mall, the goal was to create the ambiance of a standalone store. The design cleverly conceals utilities without sacrificing the sense of spaciousness, using reflective ceiling elements to create visual interest and perceived height. Acoustic strategies were integrated to mitigate noise, and custom furniture pieces reinforced the pixel theme while offering diverse seating arrangements.

The selection of furnishings was guided by the brand’s narrative of sustainability and community. Chairs made from recycled coffee grounds and customized furniture that subtly incorporates the product’s shapes reflect the brand’s commitment to purposeful design. Lighting plays a crucial role, with a post lamp system fostering a communal atmosphere. In front of the counter is custom bench seat, the pixelated fabric mirrors the pattern of patchwork fields from above, creating a comfortable space to wait for your coffee that also acts as communal seating that enhances connection to the brand.

The client’s active involvement ensured that the design aligned with their vision of a space that serves the community. The result is a venue that not only offers a culinary experience but also acts as a canvas for the brand’s story, inviting patrons to become part of a larger narrative.

This project in Ningbo is more than a dining destination; it’s a celebration of community, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design, where every detail contributes to a cohesive and inviting experience.
