Sheraton Maui Lobby Renovation

Hawaiian architecture and interior design firm AHL Design has renovated the lobby and common areas in the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa in Lahaina, Hawaii. The centerpiece of the lobby redesign is a mosaic mural created by Artaic, featuring custom artwork by Hawaiian fashion brand Kealopiko. This mural aligns with AHL Design’s commitment to capturing the island spirit within the lobby’s design features.

The AHL Design team prioritized the guests’ arrival experience during the renovation, given the hotel’s location behind Pu’u Keka’a, also known as Black Rock, which holds cultural significance. This site is famously associated with Chief Kahekili, a warrior chief of Maui, who would dive from Puʻu Kekaʻa into the sea to demonstrate his power and renew himself in the healing waters. Inspired by this story, the design sequence for guests begins with the Artaic mural, easing their transition from the burdens of travel and encouraging them to start their own journey of renewal.

Serving as a backdrop for the concierge, the mural features custom artwork by Kealopiko, depicting the scales of the local ʻĀweoweo fish in shades of blue using thousands of ⅜” vitreous glass tiles. Artaic’s designers collaborated with the Kealopiko team to create artwork that subtly references the local wildlife, aligning with AHL Design’s larger project mission.

AHL Design enlisted Artaic to create the mural, opting for a tile mosaic suited to the hotel’s coastal environment. Given the property’s exposure to salty humidity, high temperatures, and unpredictable weather, the artwork needed to endure harsh conditions without fading. Having collaborated with Artaic on previous projects, the designers were confident that the brand would deliver a durable and vibrant art piece that perfectly matched Kealopiko’s vision.
