In Sunnyvale, California, The Wild Palms Hotel lobby welcomes guests with a “62 and Sunny” design concept – in playful reference to the region’s desirable climate and the greater property’s 1960s design inspiration – to differentiate the property within Hyatt’s robust portfolio. Following a temporary hold on development in the pandemic, a reassessment of needs yielded a fresh approach to address a shift in travel and accommodation requirements with increased sightlines and playful color palettes, reinvigorating the vintage hotel without losing its old-world charm. Completed in Summer 2024, the 4,500-square-foot lobby offers guests a comprehensive indoor/outdoor experience with streamlined F&B services and meaningful spaces for leisure travelers and remote workers to enjoy.
When guests arrive at the retro-inspired hotel through the redesigned, double-height lobby, they are greeted by a custom ceiling mobile of brightly colored, intertwining circles. In a nod to these whimsical silhouettes, supersized, dimensional wall circles were installed to emulate the texture of a vintage California bungalow, adding a sculptural layer to otherwise flat walls. Clean lines were layered with playful furnishings and fabrics in a sunkissed and citrus palette, with powder-coated tubular furniture that nods to poolside chic elements of yesteryear that have been updated for a current look. Tropical motifs such as beachballs and cabana stripes are found throughout, further emphasizing the sunny nature of the destination. The lounge area and check-in desk located within the lobby were outfitted with vibrant furnishings and fabrics, with yellow canopy chairs and striped pillow seats amongst colorful sofas and ottomans. With keen attention to detail, the greater atmosphere feels welcoming and residential while also evoking the vibrancy of a fun getaway. Prior to the renovation, the lobby was not utilized to its fullest potential; now the space evolves throughout the day. With an updated open floor plan and increased sightlines, the dynamic space provides a functional space for guests to check in, gather, work, and relax.
