Truist Center Plaza and Lobby Renovation
Little Diversified Architectural Consulting’s Truist Center Plaza and Lobby Renovation in Charlotte redefines urban interaction by creating an inviting community hub that embodies inclusivity, sustainability, and local cultural vitality.
Located in the heart of Charlotte’s urban core, the reimagined Truist Center Plaza and Lobby transforms a corporate threshold into an open, vibrant community asset. What began as a maintenance project evolved into an opportunity for reinvention, creating an elevated destination that warmly welcomes the public while exemplifying Truist’s values. Originally envisioned as a maintenance upgrade, the project evolved into a transformative endeavor that aligns with Charlotte’s 2040 Vision Plan and strengthens the city’s commitment to foster a more connected, inclusive, and dynamic public realm. Through close collaboration with key
stakeholders, the plaza was conceived as a key urban gathering space, enhancing civic engagement, placemaking, and economic vitality.
The redesigned plaza invites visitors in with open sightlines, lush native landscaping, and a re-established tree canopy that promotes biodiversity and thermal comfort. Tree-lined seating, movable planters, and interactive sculptures soften the urban environment while fostering social interaction. Custom-designed elements including integrated AV, event-ready infrastructure, and curated wayfinding support adaptability for daily use and large-scale public events. This reimagined public realm enhances pedestrian flow and encourages lingering, interaction, and shared experiences.
Inside, the lobby is designed to prioritize wellness, inclusivity, and adaptability. Natural materials, biophilic textures, and curated art create a warm, approachable atmosphere. The lobby redefines arrival with embedded artwork, intuitive circulation, and a seamless blend of security and openness. Layered lighting and strategically placed furnishings allow for a range of activities—from informal meetings to community-focused gatherings—while seamless security features ensure a safe and welcoming experience for all. The design integrates technology and intuitive wayfinding to support both day-to-day functionality and special event use.
A key element of the project is its celebration of local culture and diversity. Community-engaged art installations—highlighted by the “Threshold” sculpture by Bryony Roberts—elevate the space’s cultural relevance and ensure representation through design. These artworks, created by underrepresented artists, help tell the story of Charlotte and reinforce Truist’s values of equity, connection, and civic pride.
By prioritizing sustainability, flexibility, and human-centric design, the project serves as a catalyst for urban vitality, reinforcing Truist’s mission to inspire and build better communities. The plaza and lobby function as more than entry points; they are dynamic, evolving spaces that strengthen Charlotte’s civic and corporate landscape.
This project exemplifies purpose-driven placemaking—balancing infrastructure and aesthetics, function and meaning. Through thoughtful design, collaborative planning, and a commitment to community-first outcomes, the Truist Center Plaza and Lobby have been transformed into a true urban gathering place: one that not only reflects Charlotte’s evolving identity but also empowers it.
