Cloudhaus Hotel redefines sustainable mountain hospitality through the adaptive reuse of a former resort sales office, transforming it into a 24-room boutique retreat that harmonizes architecture, craftsmanship, and nature on Jinfo Mountain in Chongqing, China.

    Context and Challenge
Located 1,200 meters above sea level on the northern slope of Jinfo Mountain, the site offers dramatic scenery but posed significant challenges in terms of steep terrain and limited access. The client sought to repurpose an underused five-level structure into a sustainable destination that reflects the local landscape and community spirit. The design team faced the dual task of revitalizing the existing concrete frame while embedding ecological and cultural integrity into every detail.

    Design Concept and Solution
Rooted in local context, the design began with field research into nearby villages, traditional crafts, and natural resources. Discarded wood from abandoned mountain huts was reused for the lobby roof and guest room framing, processed by a local factory that also crafted custom furniture. Bamboo, bamboo shoot shells, and dragon-scale stones collected from the mountains were integrated into façades, artworks, and flooring, creating a tactile continuity between the interior and the landscape. Collaboration with local artisans reintroduced traditional weaving into modern spatial installations, merging regional identity with contemporary form.

    Impact and Conclusion
The completed hotel embodies an honest balance of material reuse, craftsmanship, and environmental care. Through minimal intervention and maximum continuity, Cloudhaus Hotel demonstrates how adaptive reuse can extend the life of architecture while sustaining local culture and resources — offering guests an experience that feels both grounded and renewed.
