Slack Tide Restaurant
510 Architects’ Slack Tide Restaurant in Richmond transforms a historic 1940s cobblestone structure into a vibrant seafood dining destination, harmonizing maritime themes with modern flexible spaces for year-round enjoyment.
Slack Tide takes its name from the calm moment between tidal shifts—the best time for fishing—and channels that spirit into a relaxed, welcoming seafood restaurant set within a historic 1940s cobblestone structure. The project involved a full interior renovation of an existing shell with no prior kitchen infrastructure, requiring the extensive renovation of underground plumbing, HVAC systems, grease ducting, and upgraded electrical services. The restaurant is located in a multi-tenant site named Ballast, sharing conceptual inspiration with Slack Tide from maritime verbiage. “Ballast”, a nod to the cobblestone weight that once stabilized ships during transatlantic trade, now forms the walls of this building.
The client’s program called for a full-service restaurant with a large bar, raw bar, and indoor/outdoor seating that could be used year-round. The space was organized into two primary service zones: a main bar and a raw bar, both designed to minimize congestion at kitchen access points. The raw bar was placed adjacent to one of two roll-up doors, with a continuous counter and seating that allows indoor-outdoor dining. The exterior patio includes a motorized pergola with rain-sensing louvers and clear vinyl screens, allowing the outdoor patio to be used year-round.
To conceal mechanical infrastructure and improve acoustics, the design team introduced a suspended wood ceiling element over the main bar with batt insulation behind paneling. The curved wood paneling paired with the painted blue ceiling creates an abstracted sense of a ship’s hull. Back-of-bar shelving includes integrated lighting and two digital display frames that can alternate between ambient art and televised events. Below-bar lighting highlights the rhythm of the tile patterns, as well as creating a soft ambient glow.
Finishes include a neutral base palette—polished concrete floors, exposed ductwork, and existing cobblestone walls—paired with accents of wood, metal, and blue-green tile. Tile patterns vary in scale and orientation to evoke the movement of waves, and the alternating color palettes differentiate the raw bar from the main bar. Flexible furnishings from Grand Rapids Chair and Venue include movable tables, fixed banquettes, and bar seating. Colorful outdoor furniture offers visual contrast against the neutral architectural backdrop and encourages engagement with the courtyard.
The result is a flexible hospitality space that reimagines a historic building for contemporary use, balancing respect for its architectural heritage with thoughtful design. The layout and curated finish palette work together to evoke a nautical yet contextual atmosphere. Since its opening in June, Slack Tide has already been featured in four local publications.
