  • area / size 3,358 sqft
  • Year 2026
  • Location Hong Kong, China,
  • At Hong Kong International Airport, The Alchemist Café and Diner, spanning 3358 s.f. – emerges as an arresting vision of green serenity amid the hum of global travel. Drifting through a sea of neutral cold tones and endless glass and metal, the space captures attention instantly – draped entirely in the city’s own HK Tram Green (Pantone 3415 C), a color steeped in nostalgia and ingenuity. It’s a hue borrowed from the 1940s, when Hong Kong’s trams were painted with leftover military paint – a story of resourcefulness that becomes the soul of this design.

Working within the airport’s towering open ceilings and rigorous regulations, the concept transforms constraint into poetry. Old TV-inspired signage glows with retro warmth, embedded together with the welcome host counter, while wet market-inspired light decor and old telephone chord-inspired light features create a statement throughout. A bamboo scaffold system-inspired pavilion sits at the entrance, creating shaded micro-zones beneath the vast ceiling, grounding the space with craft heritage, also serving as a functional postcard rack.

The design pulses with masterful local collaborations that create cinematic moments: partnered with @hopkeung.hkck to craft cute golden dragon mirror frame motifs positioned against local muralist Eunis Cheong’s abstract cloud backdrop, forming a perfect scene where the dragon appears to soar gracefully above the sky. The floor reveals layered storytelling with old HK “money flower” patterns interwoven with HK-style tiger tattoo motifs—a nod to the city’s street commerce and rebellious spirit etched into every step.

Traditional Hong Kong household elements – patterned tiles, metal grilles, terrazzo counters – are reimagined throughout in perfect harmony with the enveloping green canvas. Brushed metals and rhythmic lighting build tactile depth, their sheen and shadow dancing exclusively across the unified Pantone green palette.

Functionally flawless, the layout flows with airport rhythm: open sightlines draw curious eyes, flexible seating shifts from quick counters to leisurely alcoves. Every fixture marries efficiency with artistry.

More than a dining space, The Alchemist Café and Diner is cultural alchemy – a celebration of Hong Kong’s resilient spirit. It grounds transience with stories of place, offering travelers an unforgettable taste of the city’s soul.
