Roseville Golf Club
COOOP.CO’s design for the Roseville Golf Club in Sydney harmoniously blends heritage and modern enhancements, fostering community connection while honoring the timeless elegance of its original Federation-era clubhouse.
Roseville Golf Club is a heritage-rich private club established in 1923 on Sydney’s North Shore, defined by its dramatic natural valley setting and original Federation-era clubhouse. Shaped by mature trees, rolling fairways, sandstone edges, and a central lake, the landscape has always guided the Club’s evolution and remains central to the member experience.
The historic brick clubhouse with its arched verandahs, terracotta roof, timber detailing, and generous openings to the course embodies a century-old tradition of craftsmanship, community, and understated elegance. These architectural qualities, together with the Club’s social history, form the foundation of its enduring identity.
The vision for Roseville Golf Club is one of continuity rather than reinvention. Guided by a people-first philosophy where design comes last the approach prioritises how members feel, behave, and connect within the Club. Architecture and interior design enhancements are shaped through Design for Behaviour and Envirohacking and principles, ensuring that every decision begins with human experience rather than form.
Working with the Club’s heritage, original forms, proportions, and materials are preserved and thoughtfully reinterpreted, improving comfort, functionality, and connection to the landscape. The clubhouse remains warm, familiar, and relevant, not through visual change alone, but through a deeper calibration of how spaces support social interaction, ease of movement, and a sense of belonging. By strengthening the relationship between people, place, and environment, the Club carries its legacy forward with purpose.
The renewal demonstrates how heritage-led design can evolve with clarity and restraint. Rather than pursuing change for its own sake, the project focuses on reinforcing identity, recognising that the Club is not simply a building, but a social institution shaped by memory, ritual, and community. Every intervention is considered through the lens of behaviour: how people arrive, gather, interact, and dwell.
Through a careful balance of restoration and contemporary enhancement, the clubhouse now supports modern hospitality while remaining deeply familiar. Spaces are subtly tuned using Envirohacking strategies to encourage comfort, confidence, and connection guiding behaviour without overt instruction. From arrival through to gathering, lingering, and departure, the environment works intuitively with its members.
The result is a clubhouse that feels timeless rather than new, one that honours its past, serves its present, and is prepared to adapt into the future. Roseville Golf Club stands as an enduring example of how a people-first, behaviour-led design approach can reinforce identity, strengthen community, and ensure a legacy is not only preserved, but carried forward with intent.
