  • A visit to London offers a glimpse into its rich history, from Roman times to the present day. This layered history inspired the interior design of the Mercure London Earl’s Court hotel, crafted by MIXD studio. Located in the charming Earl’s Court district, the hotel serves as a gateway to various attractions, including museums, parks, and local pubs, making it ideal for both tourists and business travelers.

The design team aimed to renovate the existing hotel while adding a new layer of appeal, reflecting London’s architectural diversity, where Gothic churches coexist with modern skyscrapers. Piotr Kalinowski, CEO of MIXD, emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from the Arts & Crafts movement, British pop culture, and the district’s history. The design incorporates playful elements, such as reimagined white brick tiles reminiscent of the London Underground and Polish-made furniture.

The hotel lobby is designed as a welcoming portal, featuring mood lighting and a cozy atmosphere that offers respite from the city. A circular area in the lobby, marked by curtains and distinct flooring, hints at a potential teleportation point, evoking the spirit of Doctor Who. Catering primarily to business guests, the hotel includes efficient check-in facilities and a buffet for quick meals.

The guest rooms are designed for comfort, featuring large upholstered headboards and ambient lighting. Notable design elements include Melt wall sconces by British designer Tom Dixon, which enhance the layered effect of the interiors. Custom-made wardrobes reference the TARDIS from Doctor Who, adding a whimsical touch.

The corridors feature sand-colored wallpaper and vibrant, geometric-patterned carpets that create a dynamic atmosphere. The route to Barnaby’s bar and restaurant is marked by an impressive chandelier reminiscent of city alley lanterns. Barnaby, a character created by the Paris Society agency, embodies a cosmopolitan traveler who hosts guests in a warm, inviting space filled with travel memorabilia and artworks. The menu at Barnaby’s blends traditional British cuisine with global flavors, inviting guests to unwind in a cozy setting.

Kalinowski notes that the Mercure London Earl’s Court project sets a new standard for the Mercure brand in the UK, emphasizing storytelling, particularly in the bar and restaurant areas, which align with British culinary experience design. Overall, the hotel captures the essence of London’s vibrant history and culture, making it a unique destination for visitors.
