Vokrug_Podrug Cafe

Quadrum Studio’s Vokrug_Podrug Cafe in Penza, Russia, harmoniously blends vibrant pink hues and playful design to create an empowering space for women, encompassing a coffee shop and local brand store within a historic girls’ gymnasium.

  • area / size 1,615 sqft
  • Year 2025
  • Location Penza, Russia,
  • The project is a pink Narnia, where from the threshold everything is aimed at awakening girlish energy, and the conductor to these emotions is a large concentration of shades of pink.

99% of the project team working on the space are girls. Designers, assemblers, contractors, and the founders of the brand themselves. “Around Friends” are two spaces, representing a coffee shop and a store of local brands.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the building of a girls’ gymnasium, now an architectural monument, where our project “Around Friends” was implemented – a women’s space in delicate pink shades, combining a coffee shop and a store of local brands.

When developing the design, we wanted to make it bright and eye-catching. The bar part is covered with glaze with a delicate stretch from white to a light blush. The combination of smooth and clear lines on the ceiling does not create contradictions, but makes you observe the interior. The coffee shop space has several seating options – from a common table for a bachelorette party to a single seating.

Sofas, like a “long braid” enveloping the coffee shop along the perimeter, poufs with funny elements along the seam in the form of hearts, chairs made of recycled plastic, made by 3D printing – all this creates an atmosphere where even an ordinary dish on a pink plate will have a completely different taste interpretation.

A cultural heritage building with original brickwork, which could not be used in construction manipulations. Along the perimeter of the main walls, we placed a tinted mirror with a gradient, also in a pink palette. The counter in the cafe and the cash register in the retail area are assembled from several volumes. The bar part of the cafe is covered with glaze with a delicate stretch from white to a light blush. And the light ceiling above the work areas, like the sky in a cloud, unites these two spaces.

All rails are custom, made of stainless steel, and give a feeling of a continuous line. They intertwine the entire space of the store, and the pipe, coming out of one wall, makes a couple of elegant bends, and goes into another.

A multi-tiered rack, pulled together with clamps, gives additional geometry to the space. Somewhere geometry appears as part of the architecture – for example, a slatted ceiling or shelves that “flow” from a niche.

In such projects, there is always room for experiments and colors, like a sink made of colored concrete, or cute details in the form of hearts on a stainless steel belt on poufs, colored mirrors, and furniture with spectacular shapes from Russian brands eburet made from recycled materials.
