Zeyin Jinze Boutique Hotel

Located in Shanghai’s Qingpu District, Zeyin Jinze Boutique Hotel is a hidden retreat nestled beside the historic Tianhuangge Bridge in Jinze Ancient Town—traditionally known as the “First Bridge Town of Jiangnan.” Unlike overly commercialized destinations, Jinze retains a quiet network of waterways, ancient gingko trees, and 42 bridges spanning the Song to Qing dynasties. The hotel’s design responds directly to this context, embracing the town’s unique spatial narrative: “Every bridge has a temple, every temple has a bridge.”

The project is divided into two zones by a public alley. The East zone functions as the hotel’s public core, housing reception, a café, and a breakfast lounge. The West zone forms an enclosed courtyard with guestrooms and a repurposed abandoned water tower. Rather than imposing a new identity, RooMoo’s hyper-local approach translates vernacular boat-building and bridge-construction techniques into contemporary architecture.

The East reception building dissolves boundaries between inside and out. Its ground-floor ceiling is draped in woven bamboo shaped into continuous bridge-like arches, evoking life beneath boat awnings. Reclaimed old wood, local bricks, Zongzi leaves, and hemp rope are used throughout. Large folding windows on the west facade blur the line between interior lounge and public alley, while the east facade opens toward a riverside dock. On the second floor, movable partition screens woven from black bamboo subtly depict water ripples, adding handcrafted tactility.

In the West guestroom zone, the architectural language of bridges and temples is directly fused. Pitched roofs combine temple-style triangular timber supports with arched bridge structures, making each room feel sheltered beneath a symbolic “bridge-temple.” The beds are conceived as boat hulls, raised on reclaimed timber pillars and topped with curved canopies of woven bamboo and Zongzi leaves. Every guestroom includes a private hot spring tub, each framing a distinct view of the ancient town.

The climax of the project is the reborn water tower. Accessed via a second-floor corridor, its top is clad in reclaimed wood and transformed into a luminous “migratory bird’s nest” at night—offering panoramic views and serving as a landmark that connects Phase 1 with future expansions.

Ultimately, Zeyin Jinze is not merely a hotel but a contemporary bridge spanning time—weaving historic craftsmanship, local materials, and tranquil water-town living into an immersive, sustainable sanctuary on the edge of Shanghai.
