Cool Drinks YYC
Block Licensed Interior Design Inc. reimagines the “dirty soda” concept in Calgary, AB, with Cool Drinks YYC—a coastal modern oasis that harmonizes playful design with brand identity to create an immersive customer experience characterized by soft curves, warm materials, and thoughtful spatial organization.
The design direction for this “dirty soda” shop, focused on an experience led interior that prioritizes brand identity and memorable customer engagement. Departing from nostalgia driven precedents that are typical among conventional soda shops, the design introduces a refined coastal modern aesthetic inspired by the relaxed energy of a perpetual summer in Western Australia, informed by a personal family narrative inspired by the owner’s father. The result is an environment that feels both playful and elevated, unified through a consistent language of soft curves and warm, natural materials creating a strong first impression for the brand.
A client-focused, user experience strategy drives the planning and spatial organization. A wide, curved service counter anchors the space, intuitively guiding customers through ordering and pickup during high-volume periods. This gesture is reinforced overhead by a sculptural, curved bulkhead, detailed with custom beams inspired by Australian beach houses, visually grounding the counter and anchoring the custom “order” and “pickup” signage.
Curvilinear design elements continue throughout the space to create cohesion, movement and visual flow. Soft, rounded pendant lighting hover above the drink bar, while a curved doorframe subtly separates front and back-of-house operations. Custom millwork continues the concept, including a curved bench cove for seating and sculpted waste and recycling receptacles with rounded forms that seamlessly integrate into the overall design language.
Materiality and branding further enhance the immersive experience. Warm wood tones are paired with bright, energetic colours and surfboard-inspired graphic signage establishing a distinct visual identity. A floating shelf behind the counter displays a variety of syrups, adding both visual interest and operational functionality. Layered throughout the space plants and cheeky signage introduce texture, playfulness and reinforce the relaxed, coastal influence.
Moments of interaction and shareability are intentionally embedded throughout the space. A feature mirror installation offers visitors a dedicated opportunity to capture and share their experience, extending the brand narrative beyond the physical environment and reinforcing its social presence beyond the physical space.
By merging cohesive design and a strong brand narrative, Cool Drinks transforms a quick beverage stop into an immersive and energy packed escape supporting the deliciousness of their offering. The project successfully delivers a space that is intuitive, visually distinctive, and highly adaptable to the demands of a fast-paced retail environment, setting a new benchmark for “dirty soda” experiences in Calgary.
