Sofitel Cotonou Benin Marina

At Sofitel Cotonou Benin Marina, a new hotel in Cotonou designed by S+S Design Studio (Sundukovy Sisters), French elegance is reinterpreted through Beninese heritage. Rather than relying on literal references, the interiors weave together the French philosophy of art de vivre and Beninese craftsmanship to create spaces that embody the Sofitel brand while offering guests a refined sense of comfort, place and understated luxury.

The design draws on the principles of French classicism while incorporating materials, textures and artistic traditions rooted in Benin. A restrained palette, natural stone, timber and handcrafted details create interiors that feel both sophisticated and deeply connected to their location.

The lobby is conceived as the hotel’s central gathering space. Its soaring volume is accentuated by a sculptural lighting installation inspired by traditional woven forms, while layered materials and carefully framed views create a theatrical yet welcoming atmosphere.

Guest rooms continue this dialogue through understated compositions, custom furniture and tactile materials. References to local craftsmanship appear in textiles, artwork and decorative elements, balancing the refinement associated with Sofitel with a distinct sense of place.

Across the hotel’s restaurants, bars and public spaces, contemporary French hospitality is interpreted through Beninese colours, textures and artisanal traditions. Rather than replicating historical motifs, the interiors present a contemporary expression of local identity within an international luxury brand.
Recognized with the AHEAD MEA 2025 Award in the Event Spaces category, Sofitel Cotonou Benin Marina demonstrates how contemporary hospitality design can balance global brand identity with a strong sense of place.
