Art Legacy Hotel

Located on Rua do Ouro, known locally as Rua Áurea, in the heart of Lisbon’s Baixa Pombalina, Art Legacy Hotel occupies a landmark building whose Beaux-Arts detailing sets it apart from its surrounding pombaline neighbors. Rebelo de Andrade led the architecture and interior design for this five-star, 53-room hotel, treating the renovation as an act of preservation as much as reinvention.

The studio’s approach centered on restoring the building’s original character: arched window and door openings were reinstated at street level, naturalistic bas-relief details were revived, and the building’s distinctive mansard roof was preserved as the setting for the hotel’s top-floor suites, each with a private terrace overlooking the city. Period-appropriate materials—glass and iron, in keeping with the building’s early-20th-century modernity—were reintroduced throughout, respecting the Beaux-Arts vocabulary in which the structure was originally designed.

At ground level, the hotel opens directly onto the street through its reception, lounge, bar, and restaurant, inviting the surrounding neighborhood in. Guest rooms occupy the upper floors, culminating in the mansard-level suites with panoramic views over Lisbon’s historic center.

For the interiors, Rebelo de Andrade worked exclusively with Moooi for furniture, lighting, and finishes, using the brand’s collections to bring a distinct, layered point of view to every room by balancing the building’s historic bones with a contemporary, design-forward sensibility.

Completed in 2023, Art Legacy Hotel reflects Rebelo de Andrade’s broader practice of heritage-led hospitality design: honoring a building’s architectural legacy while adapting it for a new chapter of use.
