Mere Casual Cafe
SNOB Architects presents the Mere Casual Cafe in Saint Petersburg, Russia, a thoughtfully designed 130 m² space that artfully transforms a raw concrete shell into a vibrant hub for neighborhood life, featuring an open kitchen as its operational core and focal point, complemented by a carefully curated blend of materials that fosters warmth and character throughout.
This café transforms a raw concrete shell into a bright, functional space designed around the rhythms of everyday neighborhood life. With no existing interior constraints, the layout was developed from scratch around an open kitchen, which acts as both the operational core and visual focal point of the café.
The compact entrance is separated from the dining area by a transparent glass shelving system that works as both display and partition. An integrated cloakroom and discreetly positioned restrooms support clear circulation, while large windows fill the main hall with natural light and create a sense of openness despite the limited footprint.
The material palette combines white tile, natural wood, stainless steel, glass, and marble. The stainless-steel kitchen and metal cabinetry introduce an industrial character, balanced by warm timber elements that connect the kitchen with the dining area. Mirrors and partial partitions visually expand the more private zones, while blue Murano glass sconces, an abstract artwork, and selected vintage furniture add color and character.
Custom-designed pieces are combined with mid-century furniture, creating a restrained interior with a focus on craftsmanship and durability. Rather than relying on decoration, the design uses material contrast, proportion, and carefully selected details to establish its identity.
Lighting plays an important role throughout the café. Natural daylight dominates during the day, while warm accent lighting and directional spotlights create a softer atmosphere in the evening. The lighting scheme, together with carefully planned seating, circulation, and service areas, allows the café to operate comfortably throughout the day.
The result is a contemporary hospitality interior where efficient planning and a restrained material palette are balanced by warm textures, vintage elements, and carefully controlled lighting.
