Jackson, Wyoming-based Crystal Creek Capital partnered with the Yarrow Group to transform the 135-room motel in Jackson, formerly known as the Painted Buffalo Inn. Completed in May 2017, the renovation consisted of architectural and interior design services for three preexisting buildings, totaling 66,500 sq. ft. This property is located at the crossroads of Grand Teton National Park and Gros Ventre Wilderness, and is a short distance from Yellowstone National Park.

Motels peaked as a building type in the 1950s when long-distance road trips became popular, necessitating simple roadside lodging. With the rise of mid-level chain hotels and the construction of the interstate highway system, thousands of these buildings have since fallen out of favor. In recent years, a surge in motel renovations has transformed many forgotten motor-inns into stylish, affordable lodging properties with modern-day appeal.

The Mountain Modern Motel is a unique example of this motel renaissance, transforming antiquated interiors and furnishings into a fun, innovative and highly functional space. This re-defined motel experience is the perfect basecamp for any outdoor adventure, offering the adventure traveler a thoughtful guest room that is comfortable, warm and inviting.

Creating an entirely new guest experience with a distinct contemporary and functional design that celebrates the surrounding terrain and highlights the unique culture and spirit of Jackson Hole was critical to the redesign of the Mountain Modern. Lobby and guest room décor merges historic Wild West elements with functional design, positing Jackson as the epicenter for adventure sports and wilderness enthusiasts.

Offering an exacting mix of indoor-outdoor interplay, Mountain Modern is giving the motel a long-awaited makeover where families, couples and solo travelers will instantly kick into “mountain time” upon arrival. The ideal playground for bucket-list adventures, guests are encouraged to ‘find their wild’ during their Mountain Modern stay. The choose-your-own-adventure appeal is thanks to the spirited staff—dubbed Wise Guides—who are regional experts uncovering locals-only gems.
